On Monday, an aggravated robbery targeting Mazima Bugaga Coffee Factory in Kyotera District shocked the business community and residents. Armed with guns, five robbers attacked a factory manager, making away with UGX 50 million. Fortunately, quick action by police officers on patrol turned the tide.
The suspects, pursued towards Masaka, were intercepted at Kizigo Village. In the confrontation, one robber, identified as Ssenyuumu Lawrence, was fatally shot. The other four managed to escape. Police recovered two firearms, a motorcycle, and several other exhibits from the scene. A manhunt for the remaining suspects is ongoing.
This incident is a stark reminder that businesses, particularly those in rural and peri-urban areas, remain vulnerable to well-planned attacks. As we commend the Uganda Police Force for their professionalism and response, we also urge business owners to heighten internal security measures.
Carrying or handling large sums of money without escorts or security planning is increasingly risky. Criminals monitor movements and capitalize on weak points. It’s crucial that business owners:
-
Avoid routine money-handling patterns.
-
Use secure, traceable transfer methods.
-
Employ armed security where necessary.
-
Install surveillance cameras and alarm systems.
Moreover, community vigilance plays a key role in crime prevention. Neighbors, employees, and boda-boda riders can be the first line of defense if suspicious activity is reported promptly.
COTFONE urges business leaders, cooperatives, factory managers, and farmers’ organizations to take this incident seriously and engage local authorities in building a more secure environment for economic activities.
